  11. Alexakis Syrah Kotsifali

    Alexakis Syrah Kotsifali

This wine comes from the large Greek island of Crete, which lies almost due south of the center of the Greek mainland. It’s made from Syrah (40%) and Kotsifali (60%), an indigenous grape in Crete. The Alexakis family members all work in the winery and vineyards; the family has been involved in winemaking there for many years. Today Alexakis is Crete’s largest privately-owned winery. Kotsifali makes wines that are aromatic, with full body, low acidity, and soft tannins, and light color (due to thin skins), sort of a more-scented version of Grenache. After fermentation, the wine was aged in French and American oak barrels (50% new) for 2 years. This particular blend is medium in color depth and body, with an attractive peppery-spicy aromatic quality that is reminiscent of red Cotes du Rhone wines. It has a strong enough personality that it matches nicely with Greek dishes, and also most of what we’d call the prime ingredients of Mediterranean cuisine: olives, peppers, lamb, pork, herbs, and don’t forget the garlic! Mas Sorrer captures the charm of the region of Montsant with its steep slopes of old vine Garnacha and Cariñena that has inspired Sara Perez and Rene Barbier, Jr. the same way that Priorat did to their parents 20 years ago. Formerly known as the Fallset subzone of Taragona, Montsant’s 2,000 ha of vineyards were given their own DO in order to highlight their superior quality in 2001. The grand Montsant escarpment that gives this region its name rises majestically over diverse parcels that range from granitic sand around Falset, to compacted calcareous soil, to sites covered in codols (pebbles and larger rounded stones) to slate in others. This soil diversity coupled with the large number of old vines, gives Montsant wines their distinct element of terroir and complexity. Learn More

Hacienda López de Haro Gran Reserva is a red wine produced by Bodega Classica in D.O. La Rioja. The idea of Bodega Classica is to produce "contemporary classic wines" with a traditional production but a modern twist at the same time. It is the first vintage of this Gran Reserva, following the footsteps of his younger brother López de Haro Crianza, which surely will become one of the best-selling wines next year. Hacienda López de Haro Gran Reserva is made from a coupage of Tempranillo and Graciano varieties. The grapes come from old vines in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a town with a great wine tradition at the foothill of the Sierra Cantabria. The estates are located on terraces beside the River Ebro. They have poor soils which shows a low production but high quality grapes. The harvest is done manually and the grapes are transferred to the winery in small trailers. The fermentation is performed in tanks of 30,000 kg at a controlled temperature of 28 ° C. After the fermentation, the grapes are macerated for 2 weeks. Hacienda López de Haro Gran Reserva undergoes an aging in French and American oak barrels for over 30 months. Quarterly racking is applied. After the barrel aging, the wine rests in the bottle for at least three years before going to market. Learn More

Cockburn is the business in old tawnies right now. Drink now. 4,000 cases made. –JS Product Description: The 20 Years Old stands alone. After two decades in wood, it is finely tuned and finely balanced. It has extraordinary complexity with layers of dried fruits, nuts and caramel. It has gained more wisdom and more depth than its younger sibling but age affects the fruit too. Here, the characteristics of wood ageing are really at their peak and the fruit has softened, gaining a smoothness like silk. It is slightly lighter than many other 20 Year Old Tawny Ports and it also has the Cockburn’s dry finish. We consider it therefore to be a little more refreshing. The quality of the wine we use has to be second to none. Our winemakers taste it and read its future in the shapes, smells and flavours in the glass. - Winery Learn More
