In the 1990s, Bill Hatcher managed Domaine Drouhin Oregon. In 2002 Hatcher left DDO to form A to Z Wineworks with three other wine industry veterans: Deb Hatcher (Eyrie Vineyards), Sam Tannahill (Archery Summit) and Cheryl Francis (Chehalem). A to Z was very successful and able to expand, purchasing Rex Hill Winery with investor Gregg Popovich, coach of the San Antonio Spurs, and hiring Head Winemaker Michael Davies. The size of the operation allows for economies of scale, unusual in Oregon, and keeps prices reasonable. “The Essence of Oregon” is a special release to celebrate A to Z's 15th anniversary. The weather cooperated with a vintage that looks to rival the 2008 and the 2012. This wine comes from some of the best vineyards that A to Z buys from. The result is a fuller, more structured wine with a darker profile. The fruit was fermented in separate lots, and the majority of the wine was aged for 9 months in 60 gallon, French oak, Burgundy-shaped barrels. Wine Spectator: 91 "Lightly prickly tannins surround a supple core of raspberry, cherry, and floral flavors. A hint of savory spice adds to the gentle finish. Best from 2018-22. 10,513 cases made."
