Sometimes an old favorite gets lost among the noise of new wines. Caro is a joint venture between Nicholas CAtena of Argentina and the Domaines Barons de ROthschild (Lafite) of Bordeaux. Amancaya is typically a blend of 60-70% Malbec and 30-40% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 12 months in 20% new barrique. Recent editions see reduced oak treatment with part of the wine aged in cement vats. Wine Advocate (Luis Guttierez): 90 “The 2012 Amancaya is a Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon blend labeled as Gran Reserva. It shows a classic profile and good integration of both grapes with notes of vanilla and cinnamon over the core of berry and tobacco leaf aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, nicely-balanced and has fine, abundant tannins. An elegant blend in the making. Drink 2015-2019.” Guttierez's review on the 2014: 91 “I found the 2014 Amancaya significantly cleaner and more precise than the 2013 with higher ripeness, but without excess. I prefer the 2014 even if the quality level is similar, which is very high for a wine produced in large quantities. There are some lactic aromas. The fruit seems to get more focused, and the hints of ripeness receded with time in the glass.”
